## Module 19. DC and AC Machines

Course Objectives/Outcomes: Students who complete this course will be able to:

• Recognize the various motor types (DC, AC, induction, stepper, synchronous, etc.) and their applications.
• Analyze circuits with relays and solenoids.

Module Objectives/Outcomes: Students who complete this module will be able to:

1. Identify motor parts (rotor, stator, armature, field) on DC and AC motors.
2. Select an appropriate motor for a given application.
3. Explain how back EMF affects motor speed and torque.
4. Consider motor losses (windage, friction, hysteresis, copper, eddy currents) in motor calculations.
5. Calculate the synchronous speed of a motor based on number of motor poles and/or loaded motor speed.
6. Sketch and label torque-speed curves for common motor types.
7. Calculate power, voltage, current, efficiency, and torque from motor nameplate data.
8. Specify the differences between single-phase and three-phase induction motors.
