Module 18. Batteries, Voltage Regulators, Transformers, and Sensors

  1. Remember the nominal voltages of common batteries.
  2. Specify the appropriate battery for a given application.
  3. Consider internal resistance in battery current calculations.
  4. Calculate the required capacity of a battery for a given application.
  5. Sketch and label a linear voltage regulator circuit.
  6. Calculate voltage, current, power, and power loss in a linear voltage regulator circuit.
  7. Sketch and label a transformer circuit.
  8. Use the ideal transformer equation to calculate voltage and current in a transformer circuit.
  9. Consider apparent power to determine if a transformer is operating within its safe range.
  10. Analyze circuits that include sensors and amplifiers to calculate voltage and current.
  11. Recognize and avoid ground loops.
  12. Select appropriate cabling for single-ended and differential amplifiers in noisy environments.
  13. Select an appropriate light bulb (incandescent, CFL, or LED) for a given application.
